Mental health counselors work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote mental health. They are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, and grief. They also help with job and career concerns, educational decisions, mental and emotional health issues, and relationship problems. In addition, they may be involved in community outreach, advocacy, and mediation activities. Some specialize in delivering mental health services for the elderly. Mental health counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, and school counselors. Mental health counselors work in community health and social service organizations, day treatment programs, outpatient mental health clinics, hospitals, or private practice.

The 60-credit M.S. in Mental Health Counseling provides students with core knowledge to be effective helpers in a variety of clinical settings. The program covers professional issues and ethics, counseling theories, human development, counseling skills, group work, assessment and career development. Building upon these core content areas, the mental health counseling program focuses specifically on the development of knowledge and skills necessary to work in a variety of clinical settings, such as: foundations of mental health counseling; research; evidence-based practice; program evaluation; psychopathology and psychopharmacology.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at LIU Post is fully is accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). By maintaining CACREP accreditation, the program strives to provide the highest quality of faculty and curriculum standards. Furthermore, the program satisfies the educational requirements for the New York State Mental Health Counselors License. Upon completion of educational requirements, 3,000 hours of supervised experience in the practice of mental health counseling and a passing grade on the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) are required for licensure.

Transcript(s) Applicants to LIU Brooklyn must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended showing all courses; grades; and degrees received, if any. Applicants should request that the transcript(s) be returned to them in a sealed envelope with the signature of an authorized official written across the sealed flap to be included in your admissions package. Schools not providing this service may mail the official transcript directly to the Graduate Admissions Processing Center. Photocopies, student copies, transcripts printed from university websites and transcripts received in opened envelopes are not considered official. Personal Statement The personal statement should be double-spaced and typewritten on a separate sheet attached to the form. Your statement should describe your reason for pursuing graduate study in your proposed area of study, your personal and academic background, relevant experience and your professional goals. You should mail the personal statement to the Admissions Processing Center. Be sure to include your name, contact information, campus of interest, and program to which you are applying. Letters of Recommendation Letters of recommendation should be from an academic source, preferably a professor or academic official who is familiar with your academic history and achievement. If you have been out of school for several years, professional recommendations may come from your employer or supervisor. Applicants should request that the recommendation(s) be returned to them in a sealed envelope with the signature of the recommender written across the sealed flap to be included in your admissions package. If preferred, a recommender may mail the recommendation letter directly to the Graduate Admissions Processing Center. Please refer to the Graduate Programs and Application Requirements pages to determine how many letters are required for your specific program. Forms may be downloaded at liu.edu/brooklyn/forms. Graduate Admissions Tests Please refer to application requirements on the LIU website to determine if any standardized tests are required for your specific program. Official scores of any required standardized test, such as the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL or IELTS must be directly reported to LIU Brooklyn by the appropriate testing service. The campus’s Educational Testing Service Code is 2369. The LIU Brooklyn ETS Code for Physical Therapy (ptcas) is 0333. Additional Materials Submit any additional materials that are required by your specific program with your application packet to your academic department.
