The goals of the Department of Biological Sciences graduate program are to support and encourage students in their preparation for careers as research scientists and/or educators. Programs within the department encompass all levels of biological organization, ranging from molecules to cells, systems, organisms, populations, and ecosystems. Our research strengths are in ecology, evolution, behavior, and organismal biology. We use comparative approaches to study both the evolutionary history and ecological consequences of biodiversity. These strengths complement and expand upon programs in Medicine and Engineering, and students are encouraged to draw upon the offerings of these academic units as part of their program of study.

Admission Requirements
Our program is a research graduate program, and all entering students are assigned a faculty advisor with whom they will begin research. Therefore, faculty evaluations of potential graduate students are important to decisions about admissions. We highly recommend contacting faculty members with whom you would be interested in working. Our website, https://www.artsci.uc.edu/departments/biology/graduate.html, includes email addresses, phone numbers and links to the research web pages of faculty. If you have any questions concerning selection of a faculty mentor or focusing your research interests, please contact the Director of Graduate Admissions, Dr. Stephen Matter, at 513-556-9768 or stephen.matter@uc.edu, or the Program Manager, Danielle Petermann at 513-556-6241 or danielle.petermann@uc.edu.
